What is a gundalow?

A gundalow was a long wooden flatboat that was used to haul merchandise down the Shenandoah River. The gundalow industry ended in the late 1800s, but the impact that the industry left on the valley has not been forgotten.

During this program, kids and families will get the chance to build their own gundalow! Each individual or team will have 30 minutes to build the best cardboard gundalow this world has ever seen. Once the 30 minutes are up, everyone will test their boat-building abilities during the great gundalow race! The builder of the boat that can make it to the finish line first wins a free, one-day parking pass to any Virginia State Park!
