Hiring Rate: $14.75 per hour
The Interpretive Assistant plans and presents, under the direction of the Chief Ranger, a variety of programs focusing on the natural, environmental, historic, and cultural features of Chippokes State Park and the surrounding region of Virginia. Programs may include campfires, hayrides, nature crafts, natural history/environmental education, recreational activities, outdoor skills, canoe tours, hayrides, and evening campfires. This position will maintain a log of visitor participation, produce internal park advertisements and program flyers, and maintain assigned workspace as well as develop and care for the park’s ambassador animals.
During the non-summer months, this position will schedule and travel to local schools to present environmental education programs based on current SOL’s as well as program research and development for the coming summer season. This position will educate park visitors of rules and regulations for the purpose of protecting and preserving the park’s natural areas and educating park visitors about natural and cultural resources.
This position will also be required to attend overnight training, generally twice a year. Department covers all costs associated with training. This position will post upcoming events on the department website, prepare public service announcements, submit monthly program numbers using established procedures, and assist with submitting reports and pictures for weekly reports. This position may be required to perform park related duties as needed during emergencies or on a non-recurring basis.

Position requires standing, bending, and walking in the outdoors exposed to the elements.
A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency. This position will drive a state vehicle.
