Throughout the Southern Appalachians of southwest Virginia, acidic cove forests with dense colonies of great rhododendron (Rhododendron maximum) are characteristic of coves and mesic slopes over sandstone and other base-poor rocks.  Little Stony Creek, NE of Dungannon, Scott County.  Clinch Ranger District, George Washington & Jefferson National Forests.
