Piedmont Mafic Barren – CEGL006294
The Piedmont Mafic Barren community type is endemic to Virginia, and the largest and best example of it occupies 8.5 acres on the south flank of Bald Knob, a monadnock of actinolite schist in Franklin County.  The vegetation also contains the world's largest population of Piedmont fameflower (Phemeranthus piedmontanus), the small succulent plant in the foreground.  Bald Knob State Natural Area Preserve.
