Southern Appalachian Catawba Rhododendron Heath Bald - CEGL003818

Catawba rhododendron (Rhododendron catawbiense) flowering on a rocky knob on Wilburn Ridge in Grayson Highlands State Park, Grayson County.  Note the scattered red spruce (Picea rubens) and American mountain-ash (Sorbus americana), which may be indicators of a very slow successional process.
