The Southern Appalachian Mixed Heath Bald occurs at lower elevations than the other two types, in the Iron Mountains of the Southern Blue Ridge and on Clinch Mountain in the Ridge and Valley.  Here it occupies the top of massive, fissured, sandstone caprock at The Channels State Natural Area Preserve, Middle Knob, Clinch Mountain, Washington County; elevation 4160 ft.
