The Trail Access Grants program is a 100% reimbursement program for trail projects that increase access to trail opportunities for people with disabilities. Funding for the program comes from Virginia tax payer donations of all or portions of their income tax returns to the Open Space Conservation and Recreation Fund. Future grant rounds are pending accumulation of contributions to the fund. At current accumulation rates, the next grant round is not anticipated until 2026 or later.
Scope: Grade, pave, stripe, and install ADA-compliant parking space and pave approximately .25 mile, 36 inch wide trail at Big Gem Park; install trail information signs and trailside benches.

Completion: May 2023
Scope: Pave approximately 600 feet of Keith Memorial Park’s loop trail in Nickelsville, VA with a minimum tread width of 60 inches.
Funding: $34,529.89
Completion: September 2022
Scope: Installation of approximately 500 feet of crushed stone trail to connect Potomac Crossing Park trailhead and existing trail, concrete access route to portable toilet pad, trailhead information sign, and dog waste station.
Funding: $23,000.00
Completion: January 2023
Scope: Construction of 10 foot-wide concrete access route and water access point on Roanoke River Blueway from Roanoke River Greenway.
Funding: $50,000.00
Completion: October 2023
