Did you know that every year monarchs from the entire eastern half of the United States make a 2,000-mile migration to Mexico to over-winter? Smith Mountain Lake State Park is joining the effort to help pull this endangered species back from the brink of extinction by rearing monarch caterpillars at our Discovery Center. We feed the larva milkweed from our butterfly garden, watch them mature and pupate, then tag the adult butterflies before releasing them. You too can be a part of this unique experience. Join us at our tagging event, where we tag the monarchs, record the data, and release these amazing insects to start their journey southward to Mexico.
