Experience a beautiful synergy of nature and history at Sailor's Creek Battlefield during National First Day Hikes! Enjoy one of our periodical guided tours along our picturesque trails or take advantage of our new trail guide that assists you in uncovering the fascinating history nestled in these rolling hills. We are dedicated to preserving our past while showcasing the breathtaking countryside of Rice, VA. This inclusive, rain-or-shine event is free for all attendees.

The guided tours will take place at three points in the day, on a bi-hourly basis; the first beginning at 9 a.m.; the second beginning at 11 a.m.; and the third and final beginning at 1 p.m. After your hike, enrich your experience by exploring our museum to discover even more of our captivating history!

About First Day Hikes

Every year on Jan. 1, Virginia State Parks celebrates First Day Hikes. This nationwide initiative invites people to ring in the new year by connecting with nature and making lasting memories at a state park. Ranger-led and self-guided First Day Hikes are offered across the state, giving visitors of all ages and skill levels the chance to explore outdoors. January 1 is a Free Parking Day at all Virginia State Parks. (The admission fee at Natural Bridge still applies).
