Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. The interactive map below depicts VLCF-grant projects funded since 2000.

Description: | Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation was awarded a grant of $238,937 to purchase an easement over 174 acres within the core of the Cedar Creek Civil War Battlefield. The Civil War Sites Advisory Commission of the National Park Service has rated this battlefield its highest preservation priority of I.1. The property is located adjacent to existing conservation easements, as well as to the Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park. DHR now holds an easement over the property, and SVBF utilizes the property for public interpretation of the Battle of Cedar Creek. The easement requires preservation of a large part of the battlefield as well as Cedar Creek waterfront, scenic open space, and prime agricultural soils. Matching funds for this project include: Shenandoah County, Town of Strasburg, American Battlefield Protection Program grant funding, Virginia Wetlands Restoration Trust Fund, private donations and owner financing. |
