Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. Description: | The Nature Conservancy was awarded $250,000 for the fee simple acquisition of 284 acres as an addition to the existing 731 acres owned by The Nature Conservancy and the 1,487-acre DCR Cedars Natural Area Preserve. The site contains 45 acres of riparian habitat along 1.8 miles of the globally significant Powell River and 0.25 miles of Hardy Creek. This globally significant freshwater fish and mussel habitat supports 16 globally and state rare species, in addition to globally significant terrestrial plant species and cave and karst resources. VLCF funds were matched with VA Aquatic Resources Trust Funds and USFWS Powell River enhancement funds. |
