Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. The interactive map below depicts VLCF-grant projects funded since 2000.

Description: | Grant funds of $87,500 were awarded to the Civil War Trust for the fee-simple purchase of 1.1 acres within the core area of the Sailor's Creek Battlefield in Amelia County. The Battle of Sailor's Creek, on April 6, 1865, led to the surrender of General Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Courthouse just 72 hours later. Acquisition of the tract would allow the removal of modern buildings and protect this core battlefield land by allowing its incorporation into Sailor's Creek State Park. This project was withdrawn. |
