Virginia’s working farms and forests, battlefields and other historic sites, natural areas, parks and rivers are critical to its economy, culture and quality of life. In 1999, the assembly and governor established the Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) to fund protection of these resources. | Description: | With the help of a grant from VLCF, this 1,597 acre property in Sussex County will one day provide public access to the Nottoway River and protect land for hunting, fishing, hiking, and wildlife watching. The property contains nearly 2.5 miles of frontage on the Nottoway River, a designated Virginia Scenic River and 2.5 miles of Black Branch Swamp. There are more than 220 acres of forested wetlands and more than 400 acres of bottomland hardwoods. The Conservation Fund is working with the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) to acquire this property for the creation of a new Wildlife Management Area. Over 90 percent of the property is identified as a priority in ConserveVirginia, with rankings in three different categories: Agriculture and Forestry, Natural Habitat and Ecosystem Diversity, and Scenic. Once conserved, the property can be restored to native longleaf pine and hardwoods to better support water quality and habitat for endangered species, such as the federally threatened Red-cockaded woodpecker. Federally endangered Roanoke logperch (Percina rex) and Dwarf wedgemussel (Alasmidonta heterodon) are found in this section of the Nottoway. |
