This Virginia State Parks History and Culture Day we will not only take a step back in time-we will experience it for ourselves. A variety of offerings throughout the day will focus on history prior to and during the existence of Claytor Lake State Park. 

11:00 a.m. - Howe House History Tour @ the Howe House front porch 

Learn the history of the land that is now Claytor Lake State Park and of the role of natural resources in the construction of the Howe House, lake, and park. Find out who inhabited this land first and the many changes that have taken place over the years.

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. - Fishing/History Program @ The Water's Edge Meeting Facility 

Join the rangers for a short discussion of fishing techniques and of the fish commonly found in our lake. This event is for beginners as well as accomplished fisherman. A practice casting area is provided as well as equipment and bait. Feel free to bring your own equipment if you wish. Let's plan on a great day in the park. A valid Virginia fishing license is required for those 16 years old or older and may be purchased in the Gift Shop, or online.​​​​​​                                                                                   

On display during this time will be a variety of vintage fishing and lake related items as well as a boat from 1962 to celebrate the history of fishing and lake activities at the park. 

4:00 p.m. - Roaming Ranger @ throughout the park 

Be on the lookout for a roaming ranger with a short mini-program.                      .

7:00 p.m. - Welcome Campfire @ the Interpretive Campfire Circle in Campground D                                

Join us by the campfire to meet your camping neighbors, ask questions of the rangers, or just to relax. There will be an informative and fun program with activities for the kids. Bench seating is provided, but limited. Feel free to bring chairs or blankets.
