History and Culture at Westmoreland State Park: The Civilian Conservation Corps
Where
Westmoreland State Park, 145 Cliff Road, Montross, VA 22520.
Visitor Center
When
June 15, 2024. 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
One of the original 6, Westmoreland State Park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC); a New Deal era program intended to help restore morale during the Great Depression. The CCC was responsible for many notable sites in Virginia, all of which serve as a reminder of the hardships overcome.
For many young men, the draw of "three hots and a cot" was more than enough to leave behind the only life they knew, and start afresh. This would be the first time most of them would have guaranteed food, sleeping quarters, and even shoes; and they would earn enough to support themselves, or their families back home. Join us, as we recognize the contributions made by the CCC and dedicate a new display at the Visitor Center.
From 11 am - 1 pm, author K.L. Richardson will be on site to sign, and read a passage from her most recent novel The Sons of Skyland. A historical fiction following one young man's journey with the "Tree Army" as they work in Shenandoah National Park; depicting a reality we rarely consider when it comes to the CCC, living and working with someone entirely different to you.
From 1 pm - 2 pm, a brief dedication of the new exhibit. Cake to follow.
From 2 pm -3 pm: Do you have what it takes to be a member of the CCC? After viewing the tools of the trade, test out their modern counter parts.
