Occoneechee State Park is looking for an outgoing and energetic individual to work with a wide variety of guests as part of our educational programming.
The position provides meaningful educational opportunities and experiences for park guests by interpreting the significance of the park's natural/historical/and cultural resources. The
Interpretive Assistant Ranger is responsible for the daily planning and conducting of interpretive programs and educational outreach with minimal supervision. Duties include providing the first point of contact for visitors in the Visitor Center, maintaining interpretive displays, setting up monthly displays, creating interpretive and promotional materials, updating interpretive kiosks throughout the park, creating new interpretive and cultural/historical programs, and providing quality customer service. Interpreters assist with school groups, educational programs, fairs, and park events, and can be trained to lead kayak and canoe tours, archery programs, and guided hikes.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicant must have the ability to organize and conduct nature, culture, and history programs for all ages; able to write out program descriptions, respond to emails; able to professionally answer phone calls and interact with the public; knowledge of Virginia history; understanding of ecology and familiarity with the area's flora and fauna. Must be 18 years old and have a valid Virginia driver's license.
Additional Considerations:
Prior experience or education in biology, history, parks and recreation, or wildlife studies preferred. We provide on-the-job training. The Interpretive Assistant Ranger may be required to perform other park-related duties during emergencies or on a nonrecurring basis. Position requires shift work, including weekends and holidays, to include Memorial Day and the 4th of July.

Employment in all positions within the Virginia State Parks is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a background check including a criminal history record check.
Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.
