THE DIVISION
The Division of Virginia State Parks fulfills its mission “to conserve the natural, scenic, historic and cultural resources of the Commonwealth and provide recreational and educational opportunities consistent with the good stewardship of these lands, waters and facilities that leaves them unimpaired for future generations” by operating a system of 43 state parks that encompass over 75,000 acres; over 1200 buildings, almost 1700 campsites; over 300 cabins; over 700 miles of trails; nearly 500 miles of shoreline; 36 lakes and ponds; 11 swimming beaches; 4 international dark sky sites, and offers over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.

THE TEAM
The Education and Interpretation Team at Virginia State Parks works to provide visitors with meaningful and engaging experiences that deepen their understanding and appreciation of the natural, cultural, and historic world.
With a focus on stewardship, Virginia State Parks' Education and Interpretation Program plays a critical role in connecting our visitors with nature and history while promoting the importance of preserving our natural and cultural resources for future generations. The team supports a variety of educational opportunities, including interpretive tours, guided hikes, hands-on activities, and educational signage and displays, with a goal to inspire visitors to learn more about Virginia's natural and cultural resources while fostering a deeper connection to what makes Virginia special.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Visitor Experience Specialist is a regional position that supports state parks in the Southern and Western portion of the state, working closely with park staff to develop initiatives that inspire appreciation and conservation of Virginia’s rich and diverse resources. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about connecting people with the natural, cultural, and historical wonders of our state parks and skilled in training and mentoring others to develop engaging visitor experiences.
The Visitor Experience Specialist (VES) plays a key role in advancing the Department’s mission by enhancing visitor engagement and interpretive programming across Virginia State Parks. Through direct field support, staff training, and the development of meaningful educational experiences, this position ensures that guests of all abilities and backgrounds have access to and can gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the historical, cultural, and natural resources within our parks.
Responsibilities of the position include:
The Office of Education and Interpretation is located at State Park Headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. This position will work out of and serve the South and West regions of the state, providing guidance and support to Districts 5 (Claytor Lake, Fairy Stone, Occoneechee, Smith Mountain Lake, and Staunton River), District 6 (Breaks Interstate, Clinch River, Grayson Highlands, Hungry Mother, New River Trail, Natural Tunnel, SW VA Museum, and Wilderness Road), and the southern half of District 3 (Douthat, Hayfields, James River, Natural Bridge) to strengthen interpretive programs, visitor experiences, and community connections. Will require frequent travel throughout the assigned geographical area, including overnight, weekends and holidays.

Criminal history record check, references, work history and DMV driving record will be verified prior to employment. Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to the outdoors, weather in all seasons, dust, animals and insects. Ability to obtain First Aid, CPR certifications within 12 months of employment.
