Smith Mountain Lake State Park is accepting applications for a Housekeeping Worker Lead position.
Job Summary:
Primary duties include supervision and training of wage staff in the cleaning and basic maintenance of the park’s cabins, restrooms, campground, and facilities.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Keeps track of inventory, ensuring necessary cleaning supplies are in stock and assisting Park Ranger of Maintenance/Housekeeping with placing the annual master requisition order.
- Ensures efficient turnover and pre-occupancy inspections of 20 rental cabins and completes/oversees thorough morning and evening facility cleaning routines.
- Requires shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays on a rotating schedule
- Requires attendance at several days of training prior to the start of the summer season.
- Communicates effectively, and perform duties in absence of Park Ranger of Maintenance.
Minimum Considerations:
- Must be 17 years or older
- Basic knowledge of housekeeping procedures, equipment and products.
- Experience with facility cleaning and laundry handling.
- Knowledge of safety practices in the use of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
- Experience supervising other employees and working in a customer service environment.
- Strong written communication skills, provide excellent customer service and be willing to work in a team environment.
- Experience in handling multiple activities at the same time.
- Successful candidates will have a willingness to learn the job and general knowledge of the use of various cleaning supplies/equipment.
Additional Considerations:
- Previous experience working in a housekeeping or janitorial setting is preferred.
Position is year-round, a part-time position with limited hours December through February.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
