The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.

Natural Tunnel State Park is accepting applications for Chairlift Operator positions.

Job Summary:

Performs lift operation duties that provides for a quality and safe recreational experience for state park guests.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Assists guests in loading and unloading in a safe and courteous manner from an aerial chairlift facility.
Responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of chairlift equipment, collecting fees, operating cash register, and monitors equipment.
Performs cleaning of chairlift buildings and surrounding grounds.
Operates small concession facilities adjacent to lift.
Performs emergency rescue and response procedures in the event of a chairlift mechanism or guest injury using guidelines of the chairlift evacuation plan.
Informs park visitors of park rules for visitor safety.
Acts as a front line customer service representative for the parks site.
Answers questions of park guests and provides directions and information to park guests. May be required to perform other park related duties during emergencies or on a non-recurrent basis.
Must provide own uniforms and be willing to work weekdays, weekends, nights, and holidays.
Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions from hot, warm, to cold.
Positions will start in May and end in October.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be 18 years of age or older.
General knowledge of park operations.
Ability to meet and work with the public in a professional manner.
Ability to perform basic mathematical functions
Able to read instructions and policy.
Practice exceptional customer service.
American Red Cross First Aid and/or CPR certification desired.
Must be able to stand for long periods of time and not have a fear of heights.

Special Instructions:

Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
