The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.
Natural Tunnel State Park is accepting applications for Chairlift Operator positions.
Job Summary:
Performs lift operation duties that provides for a quality and safe recreational experience for state park guests.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists guests in loading and unloading in a safe and courteous manner from an aerial chairlift facility.
- Responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly inspections of chairlift equipment, collecting fees, operating cash register, and monitors equipment.
- Performs cleaning of chairlift buildings and surrounding grounds.
- Operates small concession facilities adjacent to lift.
- Performs emergency rescue and response procedures in the event of a chairlift mechanism or guest injury using guidelines of the chairlift evacuation plan.
- Informs park visitors of park rules for visitor safety.
- Acts as a front line customer service representative for the parks site.
- Answers questions of park guests and provides directions and information to park guests. May be required to perform other park related duties during emergencies or on a non-recurrent basis.
- Must provide own uniforms and be willing to work weekdays, weekends, nights, and holidays.
- Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions from hot, warm, to cold.
- Positions will start in May and end in October.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- General knowledge of park operations.
- Ability to meet and work with the public in a professional manner.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical functions
- Able to read instructions and policy.
- Practice exceptional customer service.
- American Red Cross First Aid and/or CPR certification desired.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time and not have a fear of heights.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
