The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.
Natural Tunnel State Park is accepting applications for Contact Ranger positions.
Job Summary:
Performs park office duties that provide for quality recreational experience for state park guests.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist visitors to the park by providing directions and information regarding services provided by the park and other local attractions.
- Answers phones and takes messages for all employees.
- Acts as a front line customer service representative for the park site and present a professional and organized approach to the work site.
- Collects appropriate fees for cabin, camping, picnic shelters, and pool party rentals.
- Makes cabin and campground reservations through use of the computerized reservation system.
- Answers telephone, uses computer to pull and print reservation reports.
- Responds to complaints and guest inquires in a timely manner and insures the proper staff member is informed to follow through on any guest complaints or needs.
- Must provide own uniforms and be willing to work weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Most positions start in May and end in September.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be able to count money, use cash register, copier, folding machine, computer software, and credit card machine.
- Must be able to use park 2-way radio.
- Must have knowledge of Business English, ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Must be able to meet and work with the public in a pleasing manner and possess excellent customer service skills.
- Perform basic mathematical functions and able to read instructions and policy manuals.
Additional Considerations:
- Secretarial/clerical experience desirable.List any strongly preferred qualifications
- Familiarity with American Red Cross First Aid procedures is desirable
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
