The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.
Natural Tunnel State Park is accepting applications for Interpreter Assistant positions.
Job Summary:
Conducts park interpretive and educational programs that provide for a quality and safe recreational experience for state park guests.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plans, organizes, markets, and presents programming of the park that enhances, entertains, and educates the park guests to the cultural, historical, and natural resources found at and near the park.
- Provides specific programming for Natural Tunnel dealing with the unique geology and karst topography found in the area.
- Develops, initiates, and leads wild cave tours, canoe/kayak tours for the park.
- Provides regularly scheduled programs utilizing self-knowledge and guest speakers in campgrounds and through the park on a variety of topics.
- Acts as a front line customer service representative for the park site.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Have education and or experience in natural resources, biology, outdoor recreation, or Appalachian History.
- Must have general knowledge of flora and fauna, history, and karst features of the area.
- Ability to plan, promote, and organize programming through social media.
- Able to implement decisions in relation to situations as they occur.
- Must be skilled in public speaking and possess excellent communication skills.
- Must be able to work with a variety of guests from young to older.
- Must be physically able to lift 80 pounds or more.
- Ability to hike steep grades and be able to be on feet all day.
- Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions from extreme hot, rain, to cold.
- Employee must provide own uniforms and be willing to work weekends, evenings, days, and holidays.
- Must possess ability to receive and acquire canoe/kayak certification through Division of State Park Certification.
- Familiar with American Red Cross CPR/ First Aid.

- Caving and geological background desirable.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service), are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins and yurts are included; one night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
