DCR is looking for talented people to fill positions listed below. Unless stated otherwise, you must complete and submit an electronic state application by the job announcement's close date.

Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is hiring! Join us in preserving what people care about most – access to the outdoors, natural habitats, open spaces, clean water, and safe infrastructure.

Virginia’s award-winning state park system, a division of DCR, boasts an incredible and diverse array of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources including parks in the mountains, on the ocean, on the Chesapeake Bay, on 8 major rivers, on 4 major lakes, 4 rail trails, 3 battlefield sites, and 32 sites listed on the National Historic Registry. Our parks encompass over 75,000 acres, offering campsites, cabins, trails, shorelines, lakes and ponds, international dark sky sites, and over 20,000 educational programs and workshops each year.

Virginia State Park's Law Enforcement Division is accepting applications for an Administrative Assistant.

In this position, you will serve as the Administrative Assistant to the Chief of Public Safety & Law Enforcement and will update and maintain administrative digital and physical files.

Duties include:

  • Performing a variety of functions to support the daily administrative needs of the Chief.
  • Performing accounting functions, financial analysis, and auditing functions to discern discrepancies, incompatibilities, or redundancies. Assisting with the monthly reconciliation of general ledger accounts
  • Maintaining and updating a variety of accurate financial records, logs, charts, and other documents.
  • Assisting with data collection and documentation
  • Providing a variety of specialized office assistance and administrative-related tasks as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive experience in a comparable administrative/financial support role.
  • Knowledge of standard office practices and procedures.
  • Working experience and competency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and ability to prepare, file, and reconcile data.
  • Working experience with financial analysis and reporting.
  • A valid Driver's License is required.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience working with state government accounting.
  • Demonstrated organizational and records management skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal direction and supervision and act independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Skill in the use of computers and software applications.

  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
