First Landing State Park is accepting applications for the Maintenance Ranger Senior position.
Job Summary:
The Maintenance Ranger Senior supports the daily operations and maintenance of Virginia State Park facilities, grounds, and equipment. This position requires the ability to work independently and as part of a team to complete tasks efficiently and to a high standard, while providing excellent customer service to a diverse visiting public.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform routine grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, trail maintenance, litter removal, and leaf cleanup.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and park facilities; restock supplies as needed.
- Operate and maintain hand tools and cleaning equipment (e.g., hammers, saws, pruners, mops, brooms).
- Safely operate power tools and specialized equipment, including mowers, tractors, weed eaters, pressure washers, skid steers, UTVs, and mini excavators.
- Complete skilled facility repairs, including drywall installation, carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, roofing, and structural projects such as boardwalk and bridge repairs.
- Perform diagnostic and troubleshooting services for vehicles and equipment; assist with small engine repair and parts ordering.
- Maintain safety equipment inventory and inspection records.
- Provide courteous assistance to park visitors, answer questions, and ensure a positive guest experience.
- Support additional maintenance and operational tasks as assigned by supervisors.
- Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid Driver’s license.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings; hours may vary seasonally.
- Capable of performing manual labor outdoors in all weather conditions, including frequent walking, bending, standing, and lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Skilled maintenance experience in facility and equipment repair, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, and landscaping.
- Proficiency in the safe use and care of hand tools, power tools, and landscaping equipment.
- Strong interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff and park guests.
- Ability to assist with training and mentoring new staff members.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
