Raymond R. “Andy” Guest, Jr. Shenandoah River State Park is accepting applications for the Night Maintenance Ranger position.
Job Summary:
Shenandoah River State Park’s Night Maintenance Rangers are responsible for the recurring grounds care, maintenance, and cleaning tasks necessary to operate state park facilities. Night Maintenance Rangers also perform some operations tasks, including posting site tags for rented campsites and picnic shelters, restocking fire wood in self-pay stalls, and cleaning of park facilities. Night Maintenance Rangers also inform visitors of the park rules and regulations, and answer questions from guests. Most shifts will be from 3:30pm-10:00pm, but can change depending on the time of year and occupancy level.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform necessary operations tasks for evening park operations, including posting site tags for rented campsites and picnic shelters, restocking of fire wood in self-pay stalls, and cleaning of public restrooms.
- Light maintenance on park buildings, outdoor structures, and grounds as needed.
- Position primarily works shifts from 3:30pm-10:00pm, with a focus on covering weekend operations.
- Must be willing to work shift work, weekends, and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Must be 17 years old or older and have a valid State Driver’s License.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to work independently without supervision, as well as in a team setting.
- Excellent customer service skills.
Additional Considerations:
- Experience working with outdoor equipment, including UTVs, zero-turn mowers, tractors, etc.
- Experience working with outdoor power tools, including chainsaws, weedeaters, leaf blowers, etc.
- Experience with simple trades work and associated tools, including carpentry, plumbing, and/or electrical work.
Special Instructions:
- Background Check: Employment in all Virginia State Parks positions is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
- Employment Eligibility: Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form. DCR participates in E-Verify.
- Driver’s License Requirement: A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.
- Work Requirements: Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for benefits and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.

- Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
- Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night prior to a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
- Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
