Farmers are invited to free manure-management workshops
RICHMOND — The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will host two free workshops this winter to help farmers maximize the use of manure in their operations.
Workshops will be offered in Rocky Mount and Rockingham County. Both meetings are geared toward dairy farmers, but anyone is welcome to attend. Lunch will be provided.
Manure can be a valuable byproduct of farming, especially when it’s applied properly to crop fields as fertilizer.
“The main focus of these workshops will be to help farmers understand the nutrient value and the dollar value of the manure, and how they fit into the overall fertility management of their operation,” said DCR Nutrient Management Specialist Becky Barlow.
Staff with DCR’s Nutrient Management Program helps farmers with the sampling and analysis of manure at no cost.
