Virginia State Parks packs June with special activities and events
When Gov. Ralph Northam declared June 2018 as Great Outdoors Month in Virginia, he recognized the importance of the outdoors. Virginia State Parks are the premiere outdoor recreation destination for more than 10 million visitors annually. https://www.governor.virginia.gov/newsroom/proclamations/proclamation/great-outdoors-month.html]
“June is always a busy time for Virginia State Parks, but we’re planning for even more visitors this year with special programs, projects and activities,” said Virginia State Parks Director Craig Seaver. “From swimming to camping, cabins to hiking, yurts to mountain biking, and even a new spray ground at Occoneechee State Park, there’s so much for visitors to see and do.”
Virginia State Parks will again participate in the American Hiking Society’s annual National Trails Day, June 2.
All 37 parks will offer trail programming or volunteer projects to help maintain some of the 600 miles of hiking, biking or horseback riding trails.
This year, the nation celebrates the 50th anniversary of the National Trail System Act.

June 2 is also the 30th annual Clean the Bay Day, sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. State parks in the Chesapeake Bay watershed will offer programs that improve the bay through awareness or volunteer projects.
The Virginia State Parks Get Outdoors Challenge [https://vasp.fun/GetOutdoors] also is in full swing. Visit five different parks between May 19 and June 30 and earn an Annual Parking Pass. The Get Outdoors Photo Contest [https://vasp.fun/photocontest] is also running until June 30.
