Celebrate National Trails Day and Clean the Bay Day, June 1 in Virginia State Parks
RICHMOND, Va. – With more than 650 miles of trails, Virginia State Parks are the perfect place to celebrate National Trails Day, June 1.
June 1 is also the 31st annual Clean the Bay Day in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation.
State park trails are available for mountain bikers, horseback riders, bird and wildlife watchers, geocachers, nature explorers, history lovers, and of course, hikers. Hiking or walking on trails is the most popular activity in Virginia. State parks also offer water trails for kayakers and canoers.
On June 1, all Virginia State Parks have volunteer projects and other programs and events to help improve trails and waterways.
Twenty-four Virginia state parks are participating in Clean the Bay Day. Pre-registered volunteers at a participating state park will receive a free park entry pass for the day.
Virginia’s newest state park, Widewater State Park in Stafford County, is looking for volunteers to work on land and on the Potomac River. Volunteers will travel with a guide in the park’s new fleet of kayaks to clean the shoreline from the water. Space is limited, and reversations can be made by calling 540-288-1400. Volunteers in kayaks must be 12 or older.

National Trails Day is part of the Virginia State Parks Get Outdoors! Challenge. Park guests who log visits to five different Virginia State Parks between May 18 and June 30, 2019, can earn an annual park pass. Find the details here.
