RICHMOND — Following a nationwide search, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation today announced the selection of Kelly McClary as the new director of DCR’s Division of Planning and Recreation Resources. McClary, the director of DCR’s Design and Construction office, brings a wealth of experience and education to the position in which she will oversee an array of Virginia’s outdoor recreation programs ranging from scenic rivers and statewide trails, outdoor recreation grants, the Virginia Outdoors Plan and master planning, and design and construction within Virginia State Parks and the Virginia Natural Area Preserve System.
“Kelly McClary brings numerous qualifications to the position — excellent project and budget management skills, strong leadership abilities, and years of experience designing and building outdoor recreation facilities,” DCR Director Clyde Cristman said. “These qualities are exactly what our agency needs to continue to serve the public and expand Virginia’s outdoor recreation economy.”
As director of Design and Construction for DCR, McClary oversaw a budget of more than $200 million and directly supervised all capital design and construction including cabins, campgrounds, visitor centers, water access and more for Virginia’s 38 state parks.
“I am eager to begin this new role,” McClary said. “DCR has many exciting projects in the works, and my team and I look forward to continuing to provide outstanding outdoor recreation opportunities for our citizens and guests.”
McClary earned a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Clemson University. She joined DCR in 1997 and has served as director of Design and Construction since 2006. She previously worked as associate vice president and lead mechanical engineer for a Richmond-based engineering firm.
She is scheduled to start new duties in late January.
