RICHMOND — The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will hold a virtual public meeting Wednesday, May 19, at 7 p.m. to discuss updates to the Sky Meadows State Park master plan. The meeting will be online, and participants will need to register to attend.
To register, visit: www.dcr.virginia.gov/masterplan.
DCR staff will provide an overview of the park’s proposed phased development plan. Plans are updated every 10 years.
The draft master plan proposes the construction of a visitor center with exhibits, meeting space and park office; construction of a new contact station with comfort station; construction of a maintenance shop; resurfacing existing roads; and, enhancing the picnic area with utilities and comfort station. The plan also proposes the enhancement of the Abner Settle Historic Area, to include in part the stabilization and renovation of Mount Bleak House, dairy barn and additional farm structures.
Sky Meadows State Park provides recreational offerings that engage visitors and help connect them with farming practices that formed its unique pastoral landscape. This 1,860-acre day-use park was recently named an International Dark Sky Park, a unique asset considering the proximity to populated Northern Virginia.
Supporting the recreational needs of the community requires the community’s input. Attendees will have the opportunity to give feedback during a portion of the meeting. Written feedback will also be accepted through June 20.
