RICHMOND — The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will hold a virtual public meeting Thursday, Dec. 16, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the Clinch River State Park master plan. The 640-acre park is located along the Clinch River in Wise and Russell counties. The meeting will be online, and participants will need to register to attend.
To register, visit: www.dcr.virginia.gov/masterplan.
DCR staff will provide an overview of the park and the master plan effort is being led by consultants from Land Planning and Design Associates under the management of Austin Brockenbrough & Associates. Once the master plan is in place it will be updated every 10 years.
Clinch River State Park has been in the development stages for several years. Under DCR ownership of several land parcels, we are now seeing the park come to life. The park will be a series of sites along the Clinch River owned by DCR and others to create single and multiple day opportunities to explore the Clinch River Valley and all its treasures.
Once developed, Clinch River State Park will highlight the Clinch River’s natural, historical and recreational resources. It will be the first blueway state park in Virginia. It will consist of several smaller (250-400 acres) anchor properties connected by multiple canoe/kayak access points along a 100 mile stretch of the Clinch River. These properties will comprise a “string of pearls,” or a collection of properties along the Clinch River for outdoor enthusiasts to access the river, participate in educational programming about the river’s ecological diversity, and enjoy the beauty of what The Nature Conservancy has deemed “One of the Last, Great Places.”
Supporting the recreational needs of the community requires the community’s input. Attendees will have the opportunity to give feedback during a portion of the meeting. Written feedback will also be accepted through Jan. 16, 2022.
