Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m., beginning Feb. 15 through April 30, per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Claytor Lake State Park is a great place for education in an outdoor setting.
Reserve a ranger and give your family or group a chance to engage in activities not otherwise available in our park. All programs can be adapted to fit the ages and interests of your group and will last approximately 45 minutes. Available programs include Hooked on Fishing, a Howe House History Tour, Claytor Crafts, Survival Fire Starting, a Discovery Room visit, and Animal Tracking. Programming is available for reservations on Fridays at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., Saturdays at 12:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 4:00 p.m., and Sundays at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Please make reservations at least 24 hours in advance by contacting John Duncan at john.duncan@dcr.virginia.gov or 540-250-2270. Monday through Thursday programs are available upon special request.
We also welcome school classes, scout groups, library clubs, youth groups, etc. We probably have programs in place that would fit the needs of your group. If not, we can create programming to coordinate with SOL's, STEM programs, etc. Claytor Lake State Park also offers a variety of self-guided activities. Visit our website for more information.
