Know Before You Go

Guidelines for park visits:

  • Know before you go. Check the website of the park you intend to visit for any alerts. Have an alternate plan in case the park is at capacity when you arrive and you are unable to enter.
  • If you’re sick with any ailment, please stay home.
  • In our effort to reduce single-use plastics in Virginia State Parks, guests are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles.
  • Play it safe: Choose lower-risk activities. This is for your own safety and reduces strain on medical resources.
  • Parking fees: If entrance contact stations are not staffed, self-pay is available, and we recommend you bring cash or a check to pay the daily parking fees.
  • Remember to recreate responsibly and leave no trace.
  • Events: Maximum capacity for outdoor events like concerts and festivals will be determined by the parks on a case-by-case basis.
  • Capacity: Some parks experience maximum capacity visitation on weekends and holidays. If possible, try to plan your visit during the week when parks are less crowded. If maximum capacity is reached, park management may temporarily stop visitors from entering the park.
  • Avoiding ticks: If you are outdoors, you should consider yourself in tick habitat and take these simple steps to reduce your chances of being bit.
