The Visitor Center at Sailor's Creek Battlefield Historical State Park offers a museum filled with treasured artifacts discovered over the years where the last major fight of the American Civil War in Virginia occurred on April 6, 1865.
Open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., year round (except for Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day), the museum is a self-guided experience structured as a timeline and is free to the public.
Through numerous information panels, glass-enclosed exhibits, temporary display cases, paintings, and photographs, visitors will learn about 19th century Southside Virginia culture, the start of the Appomattox Campaign, the Battles of Sailor's Creek, and current preservation efforts.
Rare artifacts include a variety of weapons, artillery shells, bullets, buttons, personal items, flags, and equipment. Detailed maps offer views of the armies as they crisscrossed the countryside trying to outmaneuver one another until they clashed at a small stream called Sailor's Creek.
