Tours of the Hillsman House, a National Historic Landmark, are available to the public by request.
Constructed in the 1750's with a wing added in 1815, the home was occupied by Federal forces during the final days of the Civil War in Virginia on April 6, 1865. Used as a Field Hospital, Federal Surgeons treated the wounded from both sides of the conflict during the Battles of Sailor's Creek, while the Hillsman family took refuge in the cellar.
Today, based on historic personal accounts from Lt. George Peck of the 2nd Rhode Island who was wounded crossing the creek and treated in the house, the interior is interpreted to look just as it appeared in 1865. Touring the historic home site is free to the public; however, due to staffing availability and occasional adverse weather conditions, it is highly recommended that visitors call ahead to make a reservation. When available, education specialists provide tours for individuals, families, and large groups daily between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. year-round (except for Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day).
For questions and to make a tour reservation, please call the Visitor Center at (804) 561-7510.
