A Self-Guided Driving Tour of Sailor's Creek Battlefield is available to visitors year-round from sunrise to sunset.
At the visitor center, obtain a free, trifold tour map which follows an 11-mile loop encompassing the fighting that occurred on April 6, 1865. Just 72 hours before the surrender of General Lee's Army at Appomattox Court House, the farmland surrounding the Sailor's Creek valley witnessed the last major engagement between Confederate and Federal forces in Virginia.
Occurring just before dusk, three independent clashes erupted simultaneously:
Marshall's Crossroads - Federal Cavalry ambush Confederate Infantry.
Hillsman Farm - Federal Infantry and Artillery attack Confederate Infantry.
Lockett Farm - Confederate Rear Guard and Wagon Train defend against Federal Infantry.
Along the driving tour route, roadside pull-offs with informational signage are available for the visitor to learn specific details about each of the three clashes that are collectively known as "The Battles of Sailor's Creek."
