Every year, VA State Parks in the Chesapeake Bay watershed host events for “Clean the Bay Day,” which is a large scale effort to clean up the bay watershed. Although 55% of Virginia is located in this watershed, Natural Tunnel State Park is not. To commemorate this day in our own way, we will be hosting a “Clean the Clinch Day.”

The Clinch River is quite unique and can be considered a biodiversity hotspot, containing many rare freshwater animals. Sadly, this area is similar to the Bay in that it has a history of pollution, so the park is partnering with StreamSweepers to rid the Clinch of trash and debris that has been threatening its ecosystem.

Join the efforts of the park, StreamSweepers, local organizations, and other volunteers from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The park will provide trash bags and gloves for clean up, which will occur along the Clinch River at local public boat access points. Prepare to get wet. There will be a limited number of boats available, but feel free to bring your own. Wear closed toed shoes. Meet at the Clinchport Boat Ramp (State Rte T 833, Clinchport, VA 24244).

Continue the clean up by joining us at Stock Creek Recreational Area from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to make an indirect impact on the Clinch by cleaning one of its local tributaries- Stock Creek.
