When

March 9, 2024. 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Did you know those tiny bodies of water you see in our forest are called vernal pools? These special pools fill up each winter to provide a safe habitat for salamanders, fingernail clams, fairy shrimp, and more! During this program, we'll sample the pools using nets to see how many of each species we can find! All ages are welcome. The hike in and out of the vernal pool area is about a 1-mile round trip on easy to moderate terrain. We recommend that you wear old or waterproof shoes. Although we will not be getting into the vernal pools, the ground surrounding the pools might be muddy.

We will meet at the Massanutten Shelter parking lot. If you have any questions, please email samantha.house@dcr.virginia.gov.
