Join us for this very special bonus lecture. Members of the Virginia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation will present this one-of-a-kind documentary, "Clear Day Thunder: Rescuing the American Chestnut." This tree once dominated portions of the eastern U.S. forests, from Maine to Mississippi. Pollinators depended on the flowers, and wildlife, livestock, and people relied on its nutritious nut. In the late 1800's a deadly blight began killing these trees, and in less than 50 years virtually eliminated it from our mature forests. Come learn about the amazing efforts to bring it back and see how Smith Mountain Lake State Park is joining in this mission. A member of the local chapter of the ACF will be available to answer questions following the film. Refreshments, courtesy of the Friends of SMLSP, will be served at the conclusion of the program.

The Winter Lecture Series is presented by the Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park. Proceeds go to help fund educational programs and projects in the park. Dates for the 2024 Winter Lecture series include January 7, February 4, March 3, March 17, and April 7.
