If you love birds, people who love birds, and moms, this is the event for you! In honor of both our native birds and Mother's Day, Powhatan State Park and the James River Master Naturalists are combining forces to celebrate birds and the mothers and fathers that raise them.
This event will also serve as a citizen science data-gathering event. Join us as we document the feathered creatures seen on birding walks, get creative with a bird-themed craft, learn about native plants that help our avian friends, and maybe even go home with a free native plant to put in your garden.
May 11th is Global Big Day, a worldwide bird watching event and annual celebration of birds, promoted by eBird. The birds will be outside rain or shine, so this is an any-weather event! For questions, email powhatan@dcr.virginia.gov.
Here’s what you can look forward to:
• Go on an early morning birding walk through field and forest led by a James River Master Naturalist. Bring binoculars if you have them.
• Discover the fascinating nesting behavior of avian moms and dads from Master Bird Bander, Bob Reilly (USDOI & DWR).
• Learn which native plants help birds (and how) from a local gardener and James River Master Naturalist.
• Kids can create a bird nest craft with James River Master Naturalists and feed pretend caterpillars to the baby birds.
• Take home a free native plant for your garden (first come, first serve).
• Get a free Birds & Caterpillars bookmark from the James River Master Naturalists.
