Railroad Day

For years, the railroad has played a vital role in the economics and history of Southwest Virginia. The park and Norfolk Southern Railroad are partnering together to provide a program that will touch upon railroad history and promote railroad safety. The day’s events will be from 9 a.m., when the chairlift opens, until 3 p.m. and guests are welcome to go to the tunnel, either by foot or by chairlift. Due to visitor safety issues, the tunnel has been closed to foot traffic for the past several years; however, for this event only, a waiver has been obtained that will allow visitors to explore the tunnel starting at 10 a.m.

Stop by Carter Cabin to hear about the history of the cabin and stories about the area over the past 200 years. Local vendors will also be on hand. Food and light refreshments will be available for purchase on site.

Parking is $7 per vehicle and admission is free. The chairlift is $5 per person for a round-trip ticket. For a one-way ticket the cost is $4 per person; children three or younger ride free. Parking for this event will take place in the picnic area. For more information call (276) 940-2674.
