National Public Lands Day - Plant Invaders

Location of Bear Creek Lake State Park in Virginia

Where

Bear Creek Lake State Park, 22 Bear Creek Lake Rd., Cumberland, VA 23040.
Archery Range

When

Sept. 28, 2024. 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) is a shrub that was introduced to North America from Asia for its foliage and for soil stabilization. Unfortunately, the shrub has spread though our natural areas and public lands displacing the native shrubs and negatively altering the forest ecosystem. Please join us this Public Lands Day to help stem the expansion of Autumn Olive into the park. We will start with a ranger-led talk about invasive plants, how to recognize other invasive species that might be in your own backyard, and how to remove them. For this program the park will supply loppers, but please bring your own work gloves.

Running water and restrooms are not available at the range but are available at the beach area. After battling plant invaders, cool off at the beach. Admission is waived at all Virginia State Parks on this day.
