Full Moon Cemetery Hike

Location of Powhatan State Park in Virginia

Where

Powhatan State Park, 4616 Powhatan State Park Rd., Powhatan, VA 23139.
Overflow Parking (River Bend Campground)

When

April 12, 2025. 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Step back in time as we uncover the mysteries of those at rest in the park's historic cemetery. As the sunk sinks low and the full moon rises, we will walk across the very same farm fields where those who are buried once lived and worked either as enslaved workers or as sharecroppers. Tucked away in a shady grove of forest, traditional burial plants, field stones, and graves represent the lives of loved ones long since passed.

One headstone will be the focus of our contemplation...who was Alpheus Hudson? How did he die, and who buried him? By weaving together historical records, period photographs, and our own imagination, we will uncover some of his story.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes and be prepared to walk 1 mile total. The trail is mostly flat, and we will move at an easy pace. You may bring a red light headlamp or red flashlight if you'd like. If you only have a white light, a ranger will provide you with red cellophane covering to preserve our night vision and minimize disruption of nocturnal wildlife.

You may register here to let us know you're coming and we will contact you if the program is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
