Victorian Parlor
When
Oct. 26, 2024. 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Join Park Rangers and volunteers as we explore the traditional cultural traits related to death and dying in the Central Appalachian Region. Relying on archival materials and collected artifacts, the presentation focuses on the importance of family and "neighborliness" in mountain society during a time of loss. The program will discuss many different topics including the death watch, body preparation, the wake, the funeral, mourning rituals, and more. The program will also demonstrate how changing technology and the encroachment of outside influences have turned these once vital traditions into disappearing practices of the past.
This is a free workshop however registration is required. Registration is required by 4 p.m. on Friday, October 25. Spaces are limited for the workshop, so register early by calling 276-523-1322.
