Inhale a fresh new year breath while enjoying a ranger-led walk or one on your own.
At 11 a.m., meet at Bear Creek Hall to join either "Meet the Conifers" or our "Walk Like an Animal" program. Both walks will be about 45 minutes long and less than a mile in length over moderately level terrain with some inclines but are not suitable for baby strollers or wagons. The Hall will be open at 10 a.m. with park information. The Friends of Bear Creek Lake State Park with light refreshments while supplies last to meet and greet old and new friends.
For the self-inspired, the park has trails of varying difficulty and length to customize your outing. Trail guides are available at the Hall, the park office and at major trail heads. Please keep in mind that outside of the park boundaries, game hunting is allowed in the Cumberland State Forest. Please wear blaze orange clothing if hiking the Cumberland Multi-Use Trail or the Willis River Trail.
About First Day Hikes
Every year on Jan. 1, Virginia State Parks celebrates First Day Hikes. This nationwide initiative invites people to ring in the new year by connecting with nature and making lasting memories at a state park. Ranger-led and self-guided First Day Hikes are offered across the state, giving visitors of all ages and skill levels the chance to explore outdoors. January 1 is a Free Parking Day at all Virginia State Parks. (The admission fee at Natural Bridge still applies).
