Homeschool: Animal Adaptations - Mammals in Winter

Location of Widewater State Park in Virginia

Where

Widewater State Park, 101 Widewater State Park Road, Stafford, VA 22554.
Visitor Center

When

Jan. 14, 2025. 11:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

When the temperatures drop, our heaters crank up; but how do the animals keep warm and survive the long, dark months of Winter?

The second segment in the Animal Adaptations series, this program will explore the ways that mammals have adapted to the colder climates. Hares fluff out in their white, winter coats while porpoises stock up on their fat reserves. And humans? Well, did you know that we have a gene that would allow us, in theory, to hibernate through the winter like bears? Come join our ranger in the Visitor Center to learn about these adaptations at your next park visit!

Weather depending, this program will have an outdoor segment in the field next to the Visitor Center. Make sure to check the weather and dress appropriately for the outdoors.
