Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m., beginning Feb. 15 through April 30, per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

Fish-On Academy

Location of Hungry Mother State Park in Virginia

Where

Hungry Mother State Park, 2854 Park Blvd., Marion, VA 24354.
Ferrell Hall

When

April 3, 2025. 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Let's go fishing with friends and family! Learn the basics of fishing or refresh your skills right along with Hungry Mother staff, Friends of Hungry Mother, Riverfeet Fly Fishing staff, and Department of Wildlife Resources fishing experts. You must pre-register one time for all three events at 276-781-7400. If you attend all three events, you will go home with a Virginia resident freshwater fishing license, a fishing pole, and a tackle box with everything you will need to fish on your own. Not only will participants learn about bait casting, but they will have the chance to learn about fly fishing and fly tying from some of the best fly fishermen in this area, Riverfeet Fly Fishing expeditions. Spaces are limited, so hurry and sign up quick.

Sometimes people do not feel they can attend events due to no childcare. Any children 4 years and up can attend fun fishing activities on site with a naturalist while participants perfect their new skills.

On Saturday, April 19, the morning session will be for the participants only. After lunch that day, provided for participants only, your family or friends may join you in fishing fun as we Fish-On whether from the lake banks, from a kayak, or try out new skills with the fly rods provided. Long-time anglers will be there to assist. Come out and learn a new skill and pass those skills onto your loved ones for years to come!
