July 17, 2025 11:00 p.m. - Aug. 24, 2025 11:00 p.m.
The Perseids meteor shower is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by the comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. The shower runs annually from July 17th to August 24th. It peaks in 2025 on the night of the 12th and morning of the 13th. It is famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The waning gibbous moon will block out all but the brightest meteors this year. The best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus but can appear anywhere in the sky.
Guests are welcome to gather on the Observation Field during this event and watch for meteors. We recommend chairs or blankets for stargazing during this event because of the wide-open space. Telescopes and binoculars are not necessary. Parking is available in the Visitor Center parking lot and the restrooms will be open. There will be no ranger present during this self-guided event.
