When

Jan. 23, 2025. 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Do YOU know what the Great Conjunction is? Why, it is the end of the world! Or the beginning. End, begin, it's all the same. Depends on who you ask.

Come join Chief Ranger Hillborn for the launch of Widewater's "Urban Astronomy" series. Six (6) planets, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, will be in alignment up in the night sky, all visible from the peninsula. With the use of the Celestron telescope, view these astral bodies up close and learn about the history of the stars.

This program will take place at the Potomac Boat Launch and requires pre-registration. You can pre-register by calling the Visitor Center at (540)288-1400. Your vehicle must be inside the Boat Launch gate before the park closes at 6pm as the gate will then shut and lock, so try to arrive 15 minutes early to park your car and get oriented with the viewing area. In the event you need to leave the program early, the Boat Launch gate will automatically open when approached from the inside, allowing you to leave the area without ranger assistance.

Dress for the weather! The sun will be down and we are next to the water, so it will be cold. Hat, gloves, scarves, and a hot drink are highly recommended.
