Open fires are prohibited throughout the park from midnight to 4 p.m., beginning Feb. 15 through April 30, per the 4 p.m. Burning Law. This includes wood and charcoal. Gas is permissible. Campground fires are allowed during the restricted time if a camp host is on duty and signage to that effect is posted in the campground. Failure to observe the 4 p.m. Burning Law can result in a fine. Contact the Park Office for additional information.

When

March 9, 2025. 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Deep in the forest lies the perfect amphibian retreat - vernal pools.

These special pools fill up each winter to provide a safe habitat for salamanders, fingernail clams, fairy shrimp, and more! During this program, we'll sample the pools using nets to see how many of each species we can find! All ages are welcome. The hike in and out of the vernal pool area is about a 1-mile round trip on easy to moderate terrain. We recommend that you wear old or waterproof shoes. Although we will not be getting into the vernal pools, the ground surrounding the pools might be muddy.

Please let us know if you plan to attend by calling (540) 622-2262 or emailing megan.goin@dcr.virginia.gov.

Parks are for everyone. Please let us know if you need special accommodations.
