Travel through time during the 2024 Virginia State Parks History and Culture celebration at First Landing State Park. Visit the park on Sunday, June 15th for a field day focused on First Landing history, from the pre-colonial era to modern day. This celebration will be based at the Trail Center and go on throughout the afternoon. Bring your thinking caps, good hiking shoes, and all your burning history questions.
10am - 2pm: Check out our replica artifact touch table and participate in games inspired by the indigenous cultures of Virginia Tribal Nations at the Trail Center Picnic Tables.
11am and 1pm: Attend one of our guided hikes all to do with the history of the park, CCC, and Cape Henry region. The hike will be roughly 1 hour over easy terrain (.8 miles). Please bring comfortable shoes and a water bottle.
About Virginia State Parks History and Culture Day
On June 15, 1936, Virginia became the first state to open an entire park system of six parks on the same day. To celebrate this significant anniversary, Virginia State Parks hosts History and Culture Day every year on June 15, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the stories that make our parks special while enjoying the scenic beauty of its natural landscapes. From cultural demonstrations and reenactments to ranger-led kayaking tours and guided nature walks, History and Culture Day offers special programs for visitors of all ages.
